Washburn Women's Alliance 2008-09
Promoting self-worth and independence through education
Application
MISSION STATEMENT The Washburn Women's Alliance was established to provide financial assistance for tuition, books and fees for single female students with dependent children enrolled in a minimum of six credit hours at Washburn University.
BACKGROUND In 1995, Washburn University recognized a need to support this group of female students. Responding to the need, Ruth and John Stauffer set up an endowed scholarship for single mothers at Washburn. Following the Stauffers' lead, a group of community women organized to establish the Washburn Women's Alliance, and the first scholarship of $856 was given in the fall of 1996.
Since that first year, eight additional endowments have been established and a number of current gift scholarships of $1,000 or more are awarded annually. A record $76,500 in scholarships were awarded at the 2008 luncheon. To date, WWA has awarded over $312,000 in scholarships to 272 students in need. A gift of $15,000 or more allows an endowed fund to be established in the name of the donor or the name of someone the donor wishes to honor. Proceeds from the annual luncheon featuring a guest speaker, further support the scholarship fund.
SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION Students interested in applying for the Washburn Women's Alliance Scholarship may print the Application or pick up an application from the Washburn Endowment Association.
